Political scientists have noticed an alarming trend: many citizens, especially young people, are far less motivated to vote, consider and debate political issues, and generally express their political activism than ever before. Statistics show that most people are unaware of current events, cannot name important political figures and are even unable to locate certain important countries on a map. The sensationalist tendencies of the modern media increase this tendency; although we are living in the information age, the media shows an increasing inability to impart audiences with a sense of what news is important. The result is a country of ignorant individuals who forfeit their constitutional rights to suffrage and political participation.
Our FBLA chapter recognizes this trend to be threatening and negative, and seeks to reverse the apathy that young adults demonstrate in regard to politics. We believe that in order to truly lead and and make a difference in one's community, one must spread political awareness. We realize that leadership, business and community service are inherently interconnected and we we seek to use these connections to our advantage. Therefore, in order to ecourage young adults to become more immersed in the political world, Lynbrook FBLA is selling T-shirts designed to advertise politics and government in a modern, appealing way. We hope that these will spark debate and interest, while in turn bringing funds to the organization and political awareness to the community.
